An introduction to cooking: food hygiene, health and safety and meal preparation.

The earner of this badge has taken part in a facilitated activity that has included basic cooking techniques. Developing an understanding of the importance of personal hygiene through regular handwashing, and the storage of food. They have undertaken practical activities which have used techniques in boiling, baking, grilling, frying or cooking. They have also learnt about health and safety issues relating to the use of preparation equipment such as chopping boards, knives, kettles and ovens.

Criteria

The earner has developed an understanding of some basic cooking techniques which may include boiling, grilling, frying or baking whilst undertaking practical food preparation activities. They will have followed facilitated instructions and guidance to complete tasks.
Earner has learnt about basic personal and food hygiene techniques including the importance of regular handwashing and keeping utensils clean. It has also covered aspects around food safety and storage.
Earners has learned about nutrition and the various food groups. They have combined food groups to produce a meal and learnt about the importance of a balanced diet.
Earner has used a range of food preparation equipment and been shown how to use these safely and hygienically. This may include: safe cutting techniques using knives and scissors; using ovens and hobs; using kettles and other electric kitchen equipment.
