Students accredited in Foundation PSP Fine Art have engaged fully with a broad and carefully structured programme that introduces the building blocks of visual language and creative practice. Across Years 7 and 8, they explore a wide range of traditional and contemporary techniques — including observational drawing, acrylic painting, lino printing, collage, watercolour, pencil, and mixed media.

In Year 7, students focus on key principles such as colour theory, tone, line, shape, pattern, and abstraction. Projects introduce them to acrylic blending, visual sequencing, and reduction lino printing, as well as the work of key artists. In Year 8, they develop greater visual awareness through the study of Cubism, Surrealism, and Still Life, including portraiture, negative space, and narrative image-making. Technical skills are embedded in work with watercolour layering, pencil tone, collage construction, and perspective drawing.

Throughout Foundation PSP, students are taught how to use a sketchbook as a space for experimentation, research, and evaluation. They learn to reflect on their work using visual and written annotation and begin to explore meaning and influence through the study of artists and movements. While materials and project themes are introduced by the teacher, students are expected to make considered visual decisions, reflect on outcomes, and respond to feedback with increasing independence.

By the end of Foundation PSP, students demonstrate a secure grasp of key visual principles and a growing ability to express ideas visually, evaluate outcomes critically, and work with curiosity, care, and creativity — laying the groundwork for further experimentation and personal direction in the Pathways stage.
