Excelsa students work at an exceptional level of creative and intellectual independence. Their Personal Investigation is marked by conceptual rigour, technical innovation, and sustained critical reflection. They pursue bold themes and respond with originality, often pushing conventional boundaries through scale, media, or form. Their sketchbooks show both breadth and depth — from philosophical reading and contextual theory to visual experimentation and sophisticated annotation.

Their written study reflects near-undergraduate quality: structured, fluent, and anchored in original thought. These students often extend their practice beyond school — visiting exhibitions, engaging with podcasts, curating installations, or producing work for public viewing. They show creative leadership in crits, support others with generosity and expertise, and leave a lasting impact on the artistic and intellectual culture of the department.

Outstanding Personal Investigation - Creates ambitious, resolved, and distinctive visual outcomes. Demonstrates critical and creative mastery of materials, ideas, and presentation.

Independent Scholarship and Articulation - Produces a written study of exceptional quality that weaves together critical theory, visual analysis, and reflective practice with fluency and originality.

Creative Leadership and Lasting Contribution - Models creative risk-taking, supports others, and helps define the studio culture. Leads by example in critique, research, and sustained artistic inquiry.
