Elective Badge: Professional Practice in Early Years and Childcare

Earners of this badge have demonstrated commitment to professional development by completing two or more elective modules from the Professional Practice suite. Each module deepens knowledge and practical understanding in key areas that underpin high-quality childcare and early years practice. Through completion, earners have explored the business, social, and developmental dimensions of childcare, strengthening their ability to provide inclusive, ethical, and effective care.

Criteria

To earn this badge, learners must complete at least two of the following modules:

Business Management – Understanding business requirements including tax, national insurance, and self-assessment; maintaining accurate financial records; using marketing strategies effectively; and engaging with professional support services such as NICMA.

Equality, Inclusion and Diversity – Developing awareness of equality legislation and workplace diversity; recognising discrimination and harassment; and understanding individual and organisational responsibilities for fostering an inclusive environment.

Additional Needs – Understanding the importance of a child’s profile; supporting children with learning disabilities or additional needs; using correct terminology; and delivering a holistic and inclusive childcare service.

Positive Behaviour – Building knowledge of care standards and behaviour management; identifying causes and triggers of challenging behaviour; promoting self-esteem and consistency; and working collaboratively with parents to reinforce positive behaviour strategies.
