PSP French
Only available to Students of Wimbledon High School GDST.
The French PSP Pathway develops confident, independent, and culturally fluent language learners. Students progress from structured vocabulary and grammar use in Years 7–8 to critical discussion of social issues, history, politics, literature, and film at A Level. At every stage, the pathway fosters creativity, resilience, and global awareness — equipping students for academic study, travel, and international careers.
Foundation PSP French (Years 7–8)
Students build core skills across listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Topics include introducing myself and others, likes and dislikes, where I live, free time and daily routine. Students learn how to express opinions, ask questions, and present ideas, using the present and future tenses, adjective agreement, negatives and reflexive verbs. Phonics and spelling are embedded throughout to develop accurate pronunciation and confident writing.
Learning is practical and collaborative: students create dialogues, give short presentations, and respond to a variety of short texts and spoken prompts. They explore French culture and traditions and begin to take creative risks with language. By the end of Year 8, they can communicate clearly on familiar topics and are ready to engage with more abstract ideas.
Pathways PSP French (Years 9–11)
Students deepen their fluency and accuracy, moving between tenses and using language to describe, narrate, argue, and reflect. Topics include identity, technology, travel, environment, and future plans. Grammar is explored in depth — including perfect, imperfect, future, and conditional tenses, as well as si clauses and pronouns.
Cultural knowledge is embedded throughout: students study traditions, festivals, music, and media across the Francophone world. They engage with authentic sources and respond to more complex written and spoken material. Extended writing, structured speaking, and role play help students develop resilience, clarity, and spontaneity — preparing them for the literary, cultural, and discursive challenges of A Level.
Advanced PSP French (Years 12–13)
At A Level, students study a wide range of political, social, and cultural themes — including immigration, the far right, the Occupation, and the changing family landscape in France. They explore literature and film in detail, with set texts such as La Haine or Un Sac de Billes. They develop essay technique, oral fluency, and research skills, culminating in an Independent Research Project.
They learn to analyse arguments, express complex ideas, and write in formal, accurate French. They work with authentic media (news, radio, interviews) and develop the confidence to discuss challenging issues. Many pursue competitions, reading beyond the syllabus, and attend events at the Institut Français. The pathway prepares students for university study in languages, politics, global affairs, or business — and to be culturally agile communicators in a multilingual world.
